Mental & Emotional Work

Shadow & Integration Work

What is the Shadow and why is it important?

Do you experience any of the following?

  • Feel stressed, stuck and in emotional turmoil

  • Do you lash out or avoid confrontation when you are triggered by another’s response to you

  • Do you, on occasion, act in ways that surprise you – ‘out of character’

  • Do you surprise yourself with feelings of powerful emotional currents of envy, jealousy or anger and cannot understand it

  • You feel judged, held back or insecure

  • Do you judge others behaviour and perceive it as shameful, ridiculous or unacceptable?

This is  not an exhaustive list, but if so, this is the shadow that needs and wants to be brought into the light.  The experiences indicate a denial of parts of your psyche and by suppressing these and other qualities in yourselves, you tend to feel:

  • disintegrated,

  • broken and / or

  • unfulfilled

You are a multidimensional being and life is about discovering all the wonder of yourself through every experience you have.  Self-development and therapy are conscious pathways to discovering all of who you are and integrating it into your conscious life – the good and the bad!

Yet as humans we tend to preserve and shine a light on only the perceived good in ourselves so that we may be accepted by others in society.  We also reject, supress or disown those parts of ourselves that we perceive as dysfunctional, shameful or unacceptable by others.

A prime example would be a married man who is bisexual and feels he will be rejected by his family if they knew.  As a result he keeps that side of him hidden until it implodes and affects everyone he was trying to protect including himself.  A person in such a predicament can live a happy and joyful life only when he is able to accept themselves and integrate that part suppressed part he rejected.  By revealing his truth to all, he in turn allows everyone else to live in their truth.

Shadow work is about identifying the compartmentalised aspects of yourself and integrating it into your psyche - in a healthy way - so that you may become whole and feel complete.

This intervention is for you if you want more:

  • Clarity

  • Acceptance of self

  • Courage

  • Resilience to life’s challenges

  • Developed intuition / trust in yourself

  • Balanced and harmonious life

  • Have a sense of freedom within despite having responsibilities

Carl Jung, a 20th-century Swiss psychologist stated the shadow to be the unknown dark side of the personality.  According to Jung, the shadow – in being instinctive and irrational, is prone to psychological projection.  This means that whenever one is triggered negatively by something external to them or reveres a trait in another as something beyond themselves – they are actually identifying traits deep within their unconscious that belong to them (Wikipedia).

In having displaced these negative or positive traits outside themselves it becomes unreachable and can create unconscious behaviours such as being materialistic, slandering someone’s good work, putting someone on a pedestal, criticising people and self, becoming aloof, perfectionism etc, towards others who they perceive as living a life of affluence, success, or anything that they desire and haven’t yet achieved.

The nature of life is that we are born with everything we need to achieve our highest potential from within us.  However, we are not given an operation manual of the Human Being hence majority of the people on this Earth don’t know much about Human Nature and that we have a shadow side – each unique to the individual.

Caroline Myss said that nature also demands that each living creature takes responsibility for it’s self to the best of it’s ability in any moment.  This includes taking responsibility for the shadow.  We mature into wellbeing and reach our higher potentials to the extent that we have transmuted our shadow traits and integrated them into our conscious way of being.

Life becomes vibrant as consciousness grows and it is then possible to attain self realisation.

‘Unless you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate’.  Carl Jung

Somatic Work including Meditative and Mindfulness Techniques

Why Use Somatic, Meditative and Mindfulness techniques?

Sometimes when we experience a once off shock in our lives or developmental trauma while growing up in an environment where our needs were not met adequately, it tends to create a pattern in our brains that drives how we react to certain of life's situations.

The reactions / behaviours become automated and in many cases are unconscious to the affected person.  The use of meditative, mindful and somatic practices can be very effective in bringing the person into the present and enabling them to become aware of their behaviour and the effects it has on their environment.

These sessions are ideal for you if you:

  • Suffered mild or intermediate physical or emotional shock that has cut off your connection to yourself or others

  • Are a highly strung individual

  • Have been counselled or been in therapy with psychologists/counsellors previously and feel you have processed trauma but despite overcoming your mental and emotional challenges you can’t get on with life as you desire.

  • Are experienced by others as highly-strung or over sensitive or anxious

  • Experience body aches and pains or symptoms that cannot be explained medically

  • Have worked on yourself mentally, but feel that your issues are not fully resolved – you don’t feel whole and/or don't feel embodied

  • Feel stuck in life and / or restricted in your body

  • Stuck in your habits which effects others negatively

  • You are always in your mind - not fully embodied

What will you experience:

You will have an intital one hour consultation with me where I get to understand your challenges and what you are aiming to achieve.  I will also explain how trauma and shock settle in the body and mind through the nervous system.  Depending on what shows up for you and the choices you make, we will work on a particular area of life that you would like to achieve a positive outcome.

I will talk you through particular interventions that pertain to body, mind and emotions which all aim to bring you into the present and feeling comfortable and fully embodied.

You will be :

  • Fully clothed - you may be asked to remove shoes,

  • Asked to stand, walk, move different parts of the body

  • Asked to breath and observe

  • Asked to take on different postures

The session can result in many different types of experiences:

  • You could get sudden insight and wisdom coming through on a particular issue

  • You could feel tingling in the body - a sign of energy release from the nervous system

  • You feel freer and more spacious in your body

  • You gain clarity about yourself or circumstances

  • You are able to take positive actions in your life

Price Guideline:

1 hour session:  £85 - £115  depending on location.

All fees are  payable before the session by bank transfer.  You will receive an  e-mail that contains banking details once a session has been booked.  A confirmation email will be sent to you once payment has been received.
